Born in 1929, Mel Lewis was an American jazz drummer and session musician who was well known across the music industry. Nominated for 14 Grammy Awards, Lewis was remembered for his work with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, later named Mel Lewis and the Jazz Orchestra, recording and performing with the band throughout his career until his death at the age of 60. Recognised for his unique cymbal techniques and styles, Lewis insisted on playing genuine Turkish-made cymbals, and his standard setup consisted of a range of handmade Istanbul cymbals.
